What the calculator can genuinely do
A model shows how starting capital and regular contributions would develop at a constant assumed return. Separating your own contribution from the calculated growth is particularly useful.
- look at starting capital and instalment separately
- change the term deliberately
- compare at least three return scenarios
Why returns do not arrive evenly
Real markets rise and fall. Even a broadly diversified ETF can suffer losses. Sequence, costs, taxes and the timing of payments in or out all influence the actual outcome.
What belongs to an investment decision
A savings plan has to fit your reserves, goal, time horizon and personal capacity to bear risk. Products you do not understand or cannot afford should not be chosen just because a model figure looks attractive.
